In a genre whose borders are so aggressively patrolled for the slightest aberration in tone, image, or philosophy, Black Metal was fast-approaching the status of some menacing, indivisible monolith jutting out askew from the rain-sodden countryside of an otherwise bucolic Bergen, Norway; at all times exhausting, self-entitled, and reverential, something had to give – and it finally has. WILDERNESSKING are among a growing number of artists whose edict is precisely to contest and resignify the very precepts and peculiarities upon which Black Metal established its self-assertive but limited sound, and evincible notoriety; artists who would sooner purchase a small-holding in the forests of the Pacific Northwest – to better confront, understand, and draw inspiration from the natural landscape, of course – than beg forbearance before its monstrous edifice. With their highly-anticipated sophomore release, WILDERNESSKING have announced in formal tones their alliance with the aforementioned faction – the contemporary “Post-Black Metal” movement; and where their previous efforts offered some small intimation of their passage beyond black metal‘s tired, traditional idiom, all the concomitant, musical cues and elements appear on their latest offering, and in unabashed abundance: from the frantic, swirling, stampeding immediacy of its nascent moments, to the steady, unfurling euphoria to which it eventually succumbs, only to crescendo in bold reprise at the last – triumphant; WILDERNESSKING are progressing without pretention or platitude, but with boundless wonder and enthralling self-possession, and deserve to be numbered among the little-known luminaries responsible for reviving and redefining Black Metal as we know it. WILDERNESSKING‘s second album, “Mystical Future”, will be released in January 2016 by Sick Man Getting Sick Records (Alda, Sun Worship) on vinyl, by Les Acteurs de l‘Ombre Productions on CD in February 2016, and on cassette by Grimoire Cassette Cvlture (USA) and Monotonstudio Records (Europe) in December. 2015. The album was mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley (Botanist, Deafheaven, Bosse-De-Nage) in California, and recorded with Daniel Thackwray in Cape Town, South Africa. Tracklist: A1. White Horses A2.
