Release:

Eyes Like Snow / NSP / Soulfood
03.09.2010

Info:

Spirit Descent was formed in mid 2008 by former Cold Embrace vocalist and bass player Andreas Libera. The band name was chosen due to some personal issues Andreas had to face during the last years, things that also provided material for some of the lyrics. Music-wise, he has been influenced by bands like Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Warning, Solstice and other traditional, epic doom metal acts.

After just a few weeks of songwriting and arranging, Jan Eichelbaum (former Deceptive Silence front man) joined Spirit Descent to bring his unique and professional attitude into the band.

During the following months, more songs were written and arranged, and three of them were released as an online-demo in early 2009. Those songs were instantly very highly acclaimed by many listeners and doomsters, not only in Germany. Solstice main man and Miskatonic owner Rich Walker hailed „Land Of Tears“ as one of the best doom metal songs he had been listening to in years!

In spring 2009 Guido Preussner, drummer of the old British Wave-legend „The Name“ got hold of Spirit Descent and the band's approach to songwriting as well as the traditional doom metal style they played brought him to rediscover his musical roots.

Joined by session-guitarist Joachim Folta, the 3 doom-maniacs entered Michael Hahn's Rosenquarz Tonstudio in their hometown Lübeck in Northern Germany (Cold Embrace, Warning, The Lamp Of Thoth, Isen Torr and others) in May 2009 to record their debut-album „Doominion“. The studio was chosen due to the well-known workflow and the professional approach to recording.

When they left the studio they were holding „Doominion“ in their hands, an album that is pure doom metal of the highest order! Spirit Descent don't try to reinvent doom, their style simply incorporates what doom metal is all about, it’s traditional, heavy, epic and true! The album is called „Doominion“ because „doom metal is our home, our religion, our past and future“, like Andreas said in a discussion about doom metal to describe the album, „world-DOOMINATION is our goal“....well.... Epic, low-tuned guitar harmonies, Jan's crystal-clear voice, Guido's progressive drumming and the organic and heavy production are certainly trademarks on „Doominion“.

During the following months, the community of listeners grew steadily and the strictly limited „black edition“ promo-release of „Doominion“ was sold out quickly. In the meantime, Joachim had to leave Spirit Descent due to lack of time and was replaced by none other than The Lamp Of Thoth's Randy Reaper!

By early 2010, the high quality of their album and widespread connections into the doom scene had brought them in contact with several interested labels, and they decided to sign with their fellow countrymen of Eyes Like Snow, a young but very quality-oriented label dedicated to traditional doom & heavy metal.

Prior to their record deal, the band had already sent promos to a few selected doom metal mags and feedback has been excellent to say the least (Doom Metal Front Zine 10/10, Doomantia.com 10/10).

So, the album will finally be released to a wider audience in September 2010. Meanwhile, the band is preparing a live-set in order to enter the stage whenever opportunities present themselves.
