What about “Sleazy Blackened Thrash”? Sounds even better, doesn’t it? Bunker 66 from Messina, Sicily, give you just that. They keep the flame alive that was kindled by fellow countrymen like Bulldözer, Schizo and Necrodeath, but they also have a very own take on things. Formed in 2007, the band released their debut album “Infernö Interceptörs” which sold out quickly – no need to cry though, as their sophomore record is made from just the same kind of stuff – or at least quite… remember the sleazy bits? For Bunker 66, “‘Screaming Rock Believers’ is a natural step forwards, or maybe backwards as it sounds more ‘84 than ‘86! The approach is more dynamic and much freer this time, as the band have found their unique formula for brewing a very special blend of punkish DIY-metal: It’s all about combining the menacing force of early black metal with the speed and aggression of D-beat punk, while Venom, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Discharge, Carnivore, Sodom et al. are still the main mentors for Bunker 66. Drummer Desekrator of the Altar sums it up nicely: “If you don’t have a good time with vinyls, leather and hell stop reading this!” Still reading? Great. Songs like “On the Prowl” and “(She’s got) Demon Eyes” come along with great raise-your-fist-choruses and hooks, while the title track has a very cool early Mötley Crüe (!) riff at the beginning. And then there’s something about the opening track…”Hey, we’re very proud of it! Did you ever imagine that your dear Bunker 66 would do a cover from the ever hated ‘Cold Lake’ album?” Probably not… but in the hands of Bunker 66, Celtic Frost’s failed attempt to get pally with hair metal gets smeared with sweat and grease and transformed into a dirt-encrusted punk/metal gem. Mixing was done by Bunker 66-guitarist B. Incinerator, mastering was done by Tardon Feathered at San Francisco’s Mr. Toad’s Studio, who already did the “Out of the Bunker” analogue remaster. The sound on “Screaming Rock Believers” is even more old school than on “Infernö Interceptörs”: No more bass distortion, less gain on the guitars, and on top of that, D. Thorne also dared to use clean vocals for the first time. “We initially wanted a sound similar to ‘Don’t Break the Oath’ but we kinda failed, and now we’re not able to find a comparison – could you?” Tracklist: 1.
